What Is Tie Rod End?
The Tie Rod end is attached to a single end of the Tie Rod. What is a tie rod you ask? A tie rod is a metal rod that connects the tires/ wheels to both the suspension and steering components. The Tie Rod end is attached to a single end of the Tie Rod while on the other end there is the ball joint attached which is further connected to the other wheel’s tie rod.

Various parts of the Tie Rod End:
- Ball Stud:
Ball Stud along with the tightening nut is attached to the suspension and steering components to further connect with the wheel which allows the ball stud to rotate (allowing the wheels to steer), and pivot (allowing the suspension to move up and down).
- Sliding Seal:
It is usually a rubber case or a rubber cap that acts as a sliding seal that produces increasing contact force at the sealing surface with increasing pressure enabling the sliding ring seal to seal even high pressures (200 to 300 bar) with an adequate lifetime.
- Spherical Bearing:
Tie rods must be able to rotate according to the direction in which the wheel is turned. Rod ends spherical bearing allows tie rods to perform this rotation in a precise and controlled manner.
- Socket Body:
Socket Body houses the spherical bearing and the preload spring and protects them from damage from any impact to make sure it stays at the certain position it is meant to be.
- Preload Spring:
Spring preload pushes the tire down and makes the suspension work. On big bumps at speed, the spring preload pushes the tires down to better follow the terrain and make a smoother, more controlled ride. Under articulation, the spring preload increases tire contract pressure improving traction on road.
- Closure Cap:
The closure cap ensures that the spring is safe from rocks and debris on the road by acting as a seal shield.
- Threaded Stem:
They provide fatigue strength. They also provide for proper running gear alignment which prevents fretting. They help to reduce the bending stress being transmitted to the transverse girder.

How to identify that tie rod end requires a change?
The tie rod is a very important part of the suspension and steering components. Due to constant use, wear and tear, the tie rod & tie rod end may need a replacement for safety, proper and smooth movements. The tie rod and the tie rod ends must be checked regularly for any damage as a faulty tie rod/ tie rod end may be fatal for the driver, vehicle, and the public.
Below are some signs indicating a Tie Rod End replacement:-
Symptoms Tie rod end require change
Tie rod is a very important part of the suspension and steering components. Due to constant use and wear and tear, the tie rod & tie rod end may need replacement for proper safety and movement. It is very important that tie rod and tie rod end are checked for wear and tear as a faulty tie rod/ tie rod end may be fatal for the driver and the vehicle.
Below are some symptoms that tie rod end need to be replaced:-
1.Front end alignment is off – One of the main jobs of the tie rod end is to keep the components rigid under the front of the vehicle. The tie rod end is connected to the various parts of the suspension and steering segment like Tie rod, Ball joint, tires, stabilizer linkage, etc, and helps to maintain all these parts balanced and aligned. In a case where the truck wheel alignment is off or the vehicle is not moving straight, the tie rod end might need a replacement.
2. Shaking or loosened steering wheel – In case the steering wheel is shaking or feels too loose to drive, the tie rod end might be the problem. When the tie rod end wears out, it starts to bounce around in the section or becomes too loose. This wobbling or loose condition of the Tie Rod end will start to cause vibration or shakiness to the steering making it difficult for the trucker to drive.
3. Uneven or excessive tire wear – If the tires have excessive wear and tear by the inner or outer section, it might be due to vibration or bouncing caused by a malfunctioned tie rod end. In this case, the tires need to be inspected by a mechanic and the tie rod end to be replaced if necessary.
4. A Squealing Sound When You Turn – Squealing is never a good thing to hear from your truck. If you hear a loud, high-pitched squeal that sounds like a shriek whenever you turn your truck, it may be a sign that the tie rod ends are worn out and need to be replaced. There are other potential causes, including ball joints with bad lubrication or a low level of power steering fluid. Since all of these can be dangerous to you and your vehicle, you should have a squeal looked at immediately.
5. Inability to steer the truck –If a tie rod end fails, you’ll lose the ability to steer your truck. The good news is that this is unlikely to happen without any of the previous symptoms. As long as you listen to what your truck is telling you and don’t put off service, this is something that can be avoided. But if your truck is giving you any of the above signs and you ignore them, you could be in trouble.
