Flywheel in an automobile or truck vehicle application is a circular type wheel or disc that is attached to the crankshaft at the rear end of the engine. Flywheel operates using the concept of inertia by storing energy produced using power strokes. It stores the energy of the power or mechanical strokes and imparts that stored energy to the suction, compression & exhaust strokes during the working of the engine.

Flywheel in automobile applications are generally made of steel alloy or aluminium alloy.

A sample image of a flywheel in an Indian commercial vehicle for example TATA, Ashok Leyland etc is something like this:-

Below are the ancillary parts of a flywheel in a commercial vehicle that are readily available at trucksparepart.in

  1. Flywheel shims – thick, thin & extra thick
Flywheel shims are used to prevent excess daily wear & tear during circular operation. Flywheel shim covers the outer layer of the flywheel and prevents damage. It should be able to absorb friction and pressure and protect the flywheel disc at all costs. While it should be tough, it should also have a direct fit on your truck’s flywheel disc as shims that aren’t snugly fitted might get dislocated during movement.
  2. Flywheel sensor or Crankshaft position flywheel sensor
Flywheel sensor or crankshaft flywheel position sensor is an electrical device that monitors the position of the crankshaft in an engine in commercial spare parts.
  3. Flywheel lock for Leyland Hino

TAIL LIGHT ASSEMBLY  & Tail Lamp

Tail light assembly is an important part of the back of the vehicle. Tail Lamp assembly is the group of lights that are mounted at the rear/ back end of the vehicle. It consists of 3 or 4 lights – tail light, brake light, reverse gear light and side indicator light. For example, TATA Ace has three chamber tail lamp assembly and Piaggio APE has 4 chamber tail lamp assembly. Each has a different purpose during low-visibility conditions like night/ dark sky/ bad weather or normal conditions.

Purpose of Tail light Assembly

Tail lights illuminate the rear sides of the vehicle. There are left and right side tail light assemblies. Left and right side tail lamp assemblies together signals the vehicles at the back regarding the movement of the vehicle in the front. During low-visibility conditions, the driver driving the vehicle at the back can estimate the size, shape and distance between the trucks/ car. During normal conditions, left and right side indicators help in signaling to the back vehicle the movement of the vehicle to the left or right side.

Parts of Tail light Assembly

As mentioned, Tail Light assembly consists of Tail Light, Brake light, Reversing light and side indicator light. Each has a different function:-

  1. Tail lights illuminate when the driver turns on the front headlights or when the hand/ parking brake is on.
  2. The brake light lights up immediately when the driver applies pressure to the brakes. On most vehicles, the tail lights are red and the brake lights are a more luminous red.
  3. The Reverse gear light goes on when the driver puts the reverse gear to move the vehicle back.
  4. Side indicator light is a blinking light and indicates movement of the vehicles to the left or side for a left or right turn or changing lanes on a road.

Three lights in a tail lamp assembly is called 3 chamber tail lamp assembly. It is mostly used in Light & Medium commercial vehicles like TATA Ace, Leyland Dost, Eicher Canter, JCB, Mahindra Bolero etc.

Common light sources i.e nature of light of a tail light is either Halogen light, most popular LED or SMD and xenon. In terms of brightness, first comes the Xenon and then the SMD/ LED and last comes Halogen. Xenon produces more white and bright light.

Tail lamp is also a popular light which is a single light in addition to the tail lamp assembly. TATA Marcopolo/ Starbus uses a tail lamp light which is very popular.

There are two types of suspension which are generally used in Indian trucks –  Boggi / Bogie suspension and Bell crank suspension or Push Rod suspension. Boggi/ Bogie suspension is generally used in Medium Commercial Vehicles (MCV) that is vehicles with weight capacity below 25 Tonnage and Bell Crank Suspension is generally used in Heavy Commercial Vehicles (HCV) that is vehicles with weight capacity above 25 Tonnage.

What is Bell crank suspension?

Bell crank suspension or push rod suspension is generally used in 10 wheeler/ 12 wheeler / 14 wheeler / 16 wheeler tyre vehicles or trucks which have tonnage capacity of 25 Ton, 31 Ton and 47 Ton respectively. It is used in Multi axle trucks or trucks with tandem axles (which have dummy rear axles attached with the front/ main drive axle). It is used to divide equal load between both rear axles and keep both on the ground if any road irregularity occurs. Trucks like TATA 2518, Ashok Leyland 2516, TATA prima, Ashok Leyland 4018, Ashok Leyland Cargo,  etc  use bell crank suspension. Bell crank suspension uses the Bell Crank Levers which along with the connecting rods is attached to the Lever and manages the front and rear axles for load balancing when brakes are applied by the driver or when a vehicle hits potholes or speed breakers.

Some important truck parts in a bell crank suspension are:-

  1. Bell Crank lever or Ghoda – Bell crank is something with “a lever with two arms which have a common fulcrum at their junction”. It manages and balances the weight between the front/ main drive and rear axles. Here is a youtube video for checking how Bell crank levers along with connecting rod functions (in a dummy/ diagram setting) in a bell crank suspension.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pSArG07naiU

2. Bell Crank Bush/ Sleeve/ Bushing –  Bell crank Bush or Bell Crank Sleeve or Bell Crank Bushing are made of brass and are used as inserts in the Bell Crank lever as shown below and they help in attaching and movement of bell crank pins and connecting rods. Bell Crank buses are of different height and diameter depending on the Bell Crank Lever insert diameter and length . Some of the various bell crank bush models by TRENDY truck spare parts are:-
Bell Crank Bush TATA 2416 – T1204
Bell Crank Bush Leyland 2516 – T1212

3. Bell Crank Pin/ Bell Crank Shaft – Bell Crank Pin/ Shaft is the rotating part that sits inside the holes of the Bell crank lever and helps in movement of the connecting rod. It is made of iron and to ensure proper fitting the length and diameter must be of proper size. Depending on the vehicle make and model, there are different sizes of bell crank pin. Most running sizes pins are 35mm & 42mm diameter. Some common sizes available at TRENDY truck parts :-

    1. Bell Crank Pin 42mm
      1. Kamani/ Bell Crank Pin 42 mm x 110 mm

So you own or manage a garage or a spare parts service center for trucks or commercial vehicles or for any type of vehicles? And during this tough time of doing business with Covid19 around the world, you and your business are experiencing reducing sales and profits? And being an action taker, you are looking at some action points or ideas to kickstart the ‘back to normalcy’. You are at the right page.
Read on!.

Remember Always :-

“World Class begins where your comfort zone ends” – Robin Sharma

is a rule that many successful people always follow.

Below are points for your service centre or truck repair shop or ‘Tata Motors Authorised Service Station’ (TASS) or ‘ASHOK LEYLAND AUTHORISED SERVICE CENTRE’ or ‘Mahindra Authorised Service Centres’ or  ‘truck spare parts service centre’ which can help you to increase your revenue and profits.

  • Service Reminder Service – Customers seldomly these days remember the next service date. A gentle reminder to customers regarding their next service due date via service phone call or SMS or Whatsapp or email based on last mileage or time of last service would enable customers to be updated about the vehicle service and trucks spares parts servicing. This would enable you to get more vehicles/ trucks at your service centre as compared to if you were not sending the reminders. For managing the reminders well, you need to maintain records of each vehicle’s/ truck’s – last vehicle service date, last mileage/ km reported, next service due at what mileage, time elapsed since last service, AMC contract details (if any).
  • Extended warranty/ AMC/ Free Vehicle Health Status Report/ Truck checkup Camp– Customer focussed initiatives like extended warranty at reduced price, Extended AMC, Free vehicle Health status report, check-up camps etc lure vehicle/ truck owners to get their vehicle serviced as well. Many customers don’t want the hassle of negotiating service bills and paying for service bills individually. Your service center can offer an extended all inclusive extended warranty or Annual Maintenance contract. This reduces the uncertainty of expenses at customer’s end. A status report on the health of the vehicle by your service mechanic can help the truck owner to better decide when and spare parts which need to be changed. A free truck check-up camp for say 5days, can attract vehicle’s owners who may be delaying the vehicle checkup. Think and see what extra value can you offer to your customers so that he can come and get the vehicle serviced from you rather than going to another service center or not getting at all.
  • Freebies or snacks or resting places for driver’s – Vehicle Drivers usually get the vehicles for service. When the vehicle is getting serviced, the drivers are usually at the service center. Resting place with a provision of TV and Air conditioning, a free lunch or free water, repair kit etc will attract drivers to come at your service center rather than go to a service center which does not offer these services. Remember, it’s the drivers and helpers, who generally ask the owners for the vehicle service and keeping them happy when they are at the service center, will lure them to come to your service center.
  • Meeting with Transporters/ FLeet owners in your Area – Prepare a list of your customers like big transporters, fleet owners etc or ask for a list from the company which has authorised you as a service center. Arrange for regular meetings of your business development executive with service heads of big customers like Fleet Owners, National level transporters, modern truck aggregators like RIVIGO, BLACKBUCK, TRUCKOLA, PORTER, Letstransport, Trukky  etc. .Remember to get business in a service business, you need to make good relationships. Send them your unique features or guarantees or USP which makes you different from other service providers in the same area.
  • Ready stock/ Collaboration for truck spares parts for servicing– As per your contract with your authorisation agency like TATA, Ashok Leyland, Eicher, Bharat Benz, Mahindra etc, your service center should have ready stock of spare parts or be able to arrange at an instant. Delay due to non-availability of spares would extend the vehicle service time resulting in bad customer service. You have following options sot that spares can be arranged timely-
    1. Ready stock of authorised spares
    2. Collaboration with Retail shops nearby like TATA Shoppe, Ashok Leylands Leyparts/ ValueParts
    3. Collaboration with Dealers
    4. Collaboration with spare part distributors
    5. Collaboration with Dea
