Shock absorber or damper is a mechanical or hydraulic device used to, as the name suggests, absorb shocks when the truck or automobile vehicle is running on the road due to sudden break or speed breaker or potholes. Shock absorber achieves the shock absorbing functionality by converting the kinetic energy generated by the shock into typically heat energy which is then dissipated. They also have another important purpose which is generally not noticed by the person driving the vehicle or the occupants of the vehicle i.e To keep the tyre of the truck or vehicle stick to the ground.
Functions of a basic shock absorbers in the truck are:
Absorbing shocks thereby maintaining the comfort and smoothness of the ride.
Ensuring stability of the vehicle by holding the tyres to the road.
Ensuring Safety by reducing the braking distance from the time the driver presses the brake to the time vehicle stops. By ensuring that the tyres are attached to the road, the braking distance is reduced.
Shock absorber are generally of two types or a combination of both:
Strut – Generally used in the front side of a truck or automobile vehicle and it is lightweight and compact due to less space available in the front side.
Shock absorber – Generally used in the rear side of the vehicle. Like the T3628 chassis shock absorber 3118
Strut/ Spring and shock absorber – Both strut/ spring and the shock absorber. Like the T1256 LIFT AXEL SHOCK ABSORBER for TATA and Ashok Leyland 3118
There are generally three types of shock absorbers used in Indian commercial vehicle trucks like TATA 3118, TATA 4018, Leyland 3518:
Cabin Shock Absorbers – These shock absorbers are used for supporting the cabin of the driver and ensuring greater stability, comfort and safety.
Chassis shock absorbers – This is the conventional telescopic type shock absorber which is attached to the chassis of the vehicle and it absorbs the bulk of the shocks
Axle Shock absorber – This is the part of the primary suspension and absorbs the majority of the shock. It is attached to the axle of the vehicle. As you can see from the photo below, it has both strut/ spring and the shock absorber inside the strut or spring.

Power steering fluid reservoir or power steering bottle holds the fluid for powering the steering system in a vehicle or truck. Power steering helps in turning the vehicle right or left smoothly. As soon as you turn the steering wheel, the power steering pump pushes fluid into the steering gear. The gear applies force/ pressure to the tires that helps in turning around the corner the vehicle left or right easily and effortlessly.
Other important parts of a power steering components inside a trucks engine:- 1. Power steering bottle/ reservoir – The power steering reservoir is a container where the steering fluid from the power cylinder flows in and through, then back to the pump. The power steering reservoir is found under the front hood, usually tucked in the vehicle’s passenger’s side. It can also be located on the driver’s side in some cases.
A. Power steering reservoir/ bottle leaking liquid – The power steering fluid starts leaking from the reservoir/ bottle. Excessive pressure within the pump can damage the reservoir and cause a leak. The power steering reservoir may also crack and leak due to age and high mileage. A leaky reservoir can be dangerous as it can keep you from turning the truck/ vehicle with the right force. Hence, it is unsafe to drive a vehicle with a leaking power steering reservoir.
B. Power steering reservoir/ bottle Air leakage – Foaming in the power steering reservoir indicates that air is being sucked into the system, particularly in the front seal of the power steering pump. It is important that sealing of the reservoir is proper so that air doesn’t get inside the power steering bottle. If air starts to get inside the reservoir, power steering fluid will start foaming and moving/ navigating around the corners will be tough. The steering becomes heavy because this frothy liquid cannot transmit any force.

2. Power Steering pipe/ Power Steering Hoses – Power steering pipe or hoses take the power steering fluid from the power steering pump to the steering gear and back. Most power steering systems have two hoses, the high-pressure supply hose that delivers pressurized steering fluid to the steering gear and the low-pressure return hose that moves the fluid back to the pump or reservoir.

3. Rotary Pump Valve – The component known as the rotary valve has an important job of detecting any force applied to the steering wheel. Furthermore, the rotary valve also directs the flow of power steering fluid to the appropriate part of the power steering system, depending on the direction of the turn – right or left.

4. Pulley & Water pump Pulley – The power steering pump receives its power for functioning from the truck’s engine. The key intermediary between the engine and power steering pump goes by the name of the pump pulley. The pump pulley attaches to the engine’s crankshaft by means of a special belt; as the crankshaft rotates, so does the pulley thereby generating energy.

Indian roads are filled with commercial vehicles transporting payloads from one place to another and making business possible for almost every businessman residing in different states.
These trucks come in various shapes and sizes and are designed to perform in all terrains that the trucks encounter in the journey. India is known for its challenging roads and rocky terrains and these trucks go over the limits to deliver goods and services to these locations. Due to the day-long journeys and busy schedules, these trucks are not serviced regularly because of the lack of time and availability of resources and sustain damage from time to time. Truck spare parts such as truck electrical parts and truck chassis parts come in handy when the truck needs maintenance or any damaged part to be replaced by the mechanic. For a truck moving along the road, it is necessary to have proper functioning electrical parts such as horn, lights, etc, and smoothly functioning chassis parts such as suspension, coolant system, brakes, etc. to ensure the safety of both, the driver and the public.

What is a headlight or headlamp?
Headlamp or Headlight or headlight assembly in an automobile vehicle are the set of lights (generally two – left and right) that are affixed in the front of the vehicle and illuminate for assisting the driver in viewing the traffic and the road ahead. Headlamp is the device that is attached and headlight is the beam of light produced from the headlamp.
Purpose of headlights?
Headlights are the most important part of the vehicle as they assist the driver to drive the vehicle in the night or dark light. Without headlights, the driver would be driving the vehicle without knowing where he is driving and other vehicles on the road would also not know about the vehicle. With the vehicle speed limits increasing due to better road infrastructure – highways, footpath, better roads etc head lights play an important role during night or dark light.
Position of head lights?
Headlights are affixed in the front of the vehicle for assisting the drive in viewing the road and traffic ahead. One head light is on the left and one headlight is on the right. SOme vehicles have headlight attached in the front like a halogen light with the bonnet or bumper.
Types of headlights?
Headlights are in different shapes and sizes depending on the design of the vehicle and the preference of the vehicle manufacturer. They are generally in rectangular or round or square shape. New generation vehicles have headlight that are fancy shaped like – curved from one or two corner,
Illumination method & high/ Low beam
The method of illumination of the headlights differ widely depending on the price point and usage. There are following ways headlight are illuminated:-
Halogen light (Conventional lighting mechanism)
Normal LED (Widely used)
SMD LED (widely used)
Xenon (Future)
Headlights also have an important functionality in them of high beam and low beam. In High beam, the direction of the headlight goes a little up and the driver can see far ahead and in Low beam, the direction of headlight is downwards and the driver comparatively cant see far ahead.
Parts of a head lights?
Headlamps consist of a lightbulb, the electrical wires that carry current to the bulb, a reflective mirror and the protective surface made of glass or plastic behind which the bulb rests.
Bulb – This is the Halogen bulb or LED or xenon light that glows when the driver switches on the headlight from the driver seat. THere are different varieties of bulb available – H1, H3, H4, H7, H8 etc. These bulbs come in different wattage and voltage. Attach some photos

Mirror reflector – One bulb, together with the surrounding mirror reflector of very specific shape, aims the light to the street up to a certain line, and not at all above it, where other drivers eyes are. The other one just shines lots of light ahead, for situations where you can be sure nobody is irritated. So the mirror using the principles of physics and lights, ensures that light from the headlight doesnt go into the other driver’s eyes.
Outside case – Case holds the headlight and the hard surface that protects the mirror. Also using nuts & bolts the case is attached to the body of the vehicle so that it cant be dismantled easily.

Flywheel in an automobile or truck vehicle application is a circular type wheel or disc that is attached to the crankshaft at the rear end of the engine. Flywheel operates using the concept of inertia by storing energy produced using power strokes. It stores the energy of the power or mechanical strokes and imparts that stored energy to the suction, compression & exhaust strokes during the working of the engine.
Flywheel in automobile applications are generally made of steel alloy or aluminium alloy.
A sample image of a flywheel in an Indian commercial vehicle for example TATA, Ashok Leyland etc is something like this:-
Below are the ancillary parts of a flywheel in a commercial vehicle that are readily available at trucksparepart.in
Flywheel shims – thick, thin & extra thick Flywheel shims are used to prevent excess daily wear & tear during circular operation. Flywheel shim covers the outer layer of the flywheel and prevents damage. It should be able to absorb friction and pressure and protect the flywheel disc at all costs. While it should be tough, it should also have a direct fit on your truck’s flywheel disc as shims that aren’t snugly fitted might get dislocated during movement.
Flywheel sensor or Crankshaft position flywheel sensor Flywheel sensor or crankshaft flywheel position sensor is an electrical device that monitors the position of the crankshaft in an engine in commercial spare parts.
